1. What was the first album that got you into progressive rock?
I was deep into Sabbath, Purple, Alice Cooper, and various other hard
rock and metal things when I was around 13 or 14. Then I started a new
school and the guy next to me in math class loaned me ELP's Trilogy and
Yes' Close to the Edge. I was HOOKED!
2. For those of you who play instruments, why did you choose that
instrument rather than another?
Around that same time, I was trying to learn to be a guitar shredder. I
knew a few keyboard licks, having poked around on the family piano from
time to time. I had even figured out the Inna Gadda da Vida organ solo
on my mom's department store chord organ. But I never fancied myself as
being a keyboardist until I heard Wakeman's Six Wives. That's when it
dawned on my how virtually unlimited keyboards could be. They could
rock, they could sing, they could be frightening or beautiful or
menacing or lush. It was an epiphany and I knew that was my calling! Of
course it was YEARS after that moment before I could actually afford
any decent keyboards - I made do with the afore-mentioned piano, and an
out-of-tune combo organ I bought from a guy who is ALSO in the ARIA
list, coincidentally!
