[atari7800] How do you create your graphics?

Hi there,
There has got to be an easier less time consuming way of doing these
graphics. I'm doing them by hand and it's taking forever!
1) I'm mapping out how I want them to look using a typical method I use
for 2600 development. I set up a grid that's 8 bytes long (16 for the case
of my 7800 graphics) and plug "X"s in spaces so I can "see" how it looks.
2) Then I'm taking that and assigning colors to them. So for 160x2 I'm
assigning numbers 1-3 to these "X"s to specify a color.
3) Lastly I convert these to HEX number representation.
Doing graphics this way is a pain! If I ever wanted to update or change
them you can believe it will be such a headache that I would leave them
the way I originally had them.
I know I must be the only one doing this. How are you all doing your
graphics? Is there a tool available I don't know about? Maybe your
technique will get me away from the hammer and chisel method I'm using.
Take care,
Dennis
