It's not the Kagaroo bit as setting that is obvious and affects the scroll
layers. Maybe a MESS problem? But other games must uses sprites over
character??

Just remember in 320H modes both half pixels have to be zero for
transparency to work.  A single zero half pixel will be background (which
could be used for an additional color if you were careful).  Current
versions of MESS handle this correctly.  (MESS doesn't do color artifacts
though.)
