I can't answer for what Anthony's crew is currently using -- "exotic"
is an inadequate word for some of the things they work with -- but you
can, I believe, make reasonable gas-generator fuels with quite ordinary
combinations like AP/rubber. You just put in considerably less AP than
you would for a solid -- enough that it will ignite and stay ignited,
but not nearly enough to burn all the fuel. (Whereas the usual solid
mix is more or less "all the AP you can possibly cram in without
hopelessly compromising the mechanical properties".)
Ack, yes; those were the lines along which I was thinking, but I got the
sign wrong (thinking it harder rather than easier). Even so, it's not like
ammonium perchlorate is all that much cheaper than aluminum.
