Andrew and others may draw some pleasure and a smile from the following
story of some events here over the last few days... :-)
Someone we know who is a musician had one of her recent local concerts
recorded. She brought round an Audio CDR provided by the person who did the
recording.
This was covered in blobs of gunk of some kind. Musicians, eh?... 8-]
So, no surprise, it failed to play reliably. This is despite the Audio CD
drives I am using the moment in our HiFi setups being Audio CDR/W
*recorders* which have a wider tolerance of disc types than most HiFi CD
players.
Some time was duly devoted using alcohol and then cleaner for spectacles to
remove the gunk. This gave a cleaner looking disc. But revealed a small
hole in one part of the playing area where some of the covering polycarb
was AWOL. Fortunately, the hole is smaller than about 1 mm. So nominally
OK.
One of my Audio players would now play the disc, but the other still really
struggled to find the TOC. Sign, probably of a poor disc and/or too high a
burn rate I guess.
One work really needs, anyway, to be split into movements, but is written
as one track. So...
I tried ripping the disc with my main Linux box. This fails as the start of
the disc was found to be almost unreadable just after the TOC.
I then tried my ARMX6. This worked perfectly. :-)
I used two different ripping programs for comparison purposes. So far as I
can tell they gave bit-identical results with no sign of any problems. I've
now split the work into tracks for the movements.
Moral there somewhere, but it did make me smile when using the ARMX6. Just
worked. No fuss.
