a problem with all large file
transfers to/from ARMX6
I think this is one of the key factors. My network has several RISC
OS native hardware machines, together with an NAS, and another linux
based file store machine. I have found that, in general, transferring
small files, even lots at one time, gives no problem. Once large
files are involved, then the transfer becomes slower and slower as
the transfer progresses. With a directory containing e.g. large
numbers of DSLR images or mpeg files, the transfer slows to a crawl.
None of the other RISC OS machines appear to suffer from this
phenomenon.
I have a network with two Windows PCs, both with Virtual Acorn, the
Iyonix and the ARMX6.
Sometimes when transferring files between the VA laptop and ARMX6,
using drag and drop on the PC, I have watched the count of bytes
remaining, and noticed that when I have this problem the count remains
static for anything from a few seconds to a few minutes. Whilst the
transfer is hung, the desktop is frozen on both machines. If I watch
the Organizer iconbar clocks, I notice that both the clocks are
stopped, but both jump forward when the next bit of the transfer
succeeds and the byte cound decrements. Then, if it hangs again, both
desktops freeze once again. So something is failing to relinqush
control of the cpus when the transfer hangs.
To me this smells like an issue with the handshaking between the
machines, so Andrew may well be right about the "buffer nearly full"
message not being handled correctly somewhere. I normally connect
through a fairly old Belkin wireless router (it makes no discernible
difference whether I use wireless or wired connection to the PC).
However, I also have a modern Virgin Super Hub, and I still get the
same problem if I connect through that and bypass the Belkin. I would
like to get to the bottom of this. It is true it is not
insurmountable, I can always print a page at a time, or transfer files
using a USB stick. It is just inconvenient.
