according the documenation tiffgamut should work for CIELAB Tifs.
Yes, this does work.
I have not been successful so far and tried:
Color Space = Lab
Conn. Space = Lab
Unknown: Error - Profile isn't a device profile
I would guess that the colorspace profile is confusing the
processing logic. If you could mail me the profile, I'll see
if I can figure out what's going wrong.

2)
tiffgamut PantoneHexachrome.tif
-> gives the short help message
Is it possible to create a gamut file for CIELAB Tifs?
Probably not. I think tiffgamut assumes that the tif file is
in device space. This can probably be fixed.
As a workaround I converted all 1024 named Pantone colors in a tif
from CIELAB to ProPhoto and checked if a value is 255. One value was,
so it seems that only one color from the Pantone named colors is
on the border or outside ProPhotoRGB.
Yes, that should work.
