As I understand it, these are just a hint that the measuring program can
use or not to detect wildly wrong values - I think that's how printread
does its "Seem to have read strip D not strip C" trick. I don't think
it's used by dispread though.

The correct XYZ values are needed to spread patches on the printer charts for
strip measurement instrument mode, for reasonable selection of chart spacer
colors too.
If I want to built my own test chart, I have to get XYZ from my device values
by means of icclu and preliminary device profile. I use rather high density of
patches, 720 patches 10x8mm for Eye One per A4 page. There is the charts with
no spacers are needed. So the careful optimized patch spreading by printtarg
must be done. It's impossible without XYZ data.
