One of the problems is that it's reasonably easy to figure out
what steps to take if you understand how it all works - what the
tools do, how the system and applications generally behave etc.,
but if someone is a bit fuzzy about how it works (and lets face it,
most non-color guru's are), they may struggle a bit, even if
at the end they understand a whole lot more.

Probably something like "Real world color management"
by Bruce Fraser, Chris Murphy and Fred Bunting is
the sort of resource that can help fill in the blanks.
