Just had a chance to put dispcalGUI 0.2b to test on a Vista PC using
Argyll_V1.0.3.
I have yet to analyze the log of the three calibration and profiling
sessions I conducted on my Samsung 2693HM display but, clearly, a fast
instrument like the EyeOnePro is needed to extract quality profiling with
Argyll.
BTW, Graeme, I was told by the EyeOnePro's product manager that the 3.3 nm
raw signal could not be exploited directly. Apparently, the optical system
used in the EyeOnePro is not capable of better than 6 to 8 nm resolution.
That is why, he says, that they only report 10nm data. True or false? You
have it from the horse's mouth.
So, back to dispcalGUI.
One observation for you, Florian, is, first of all, you have all my
gratitude for sharing so generously your hard coding work with the rest of
the world -- thank you, thank you and thank you.
Second observation, I was not expecting that a DOS shell window would open
up with Argyll's prompts, to which I have to respond. This is fine. But I
have to confess I was expecting to be shielded from this "complexity": not
that the system is unworkable as it is, it is remarkable, but I did not
think this is what would happen.
This being said, dispcalGUI does a wunderbar job of displaying all Argyll's
monitor calibration and profiling options.
I confess there are many dispcal options I have not had the chance to study
yet -- I have some catching up to do -- but, for the most part, I find the
presentation intuitive.
I tried three calibration and profiling sessions.
First, using the DTP94.
I'll share my settings later but the resulting LUT profile wasn't great.
Maybe because I only ask for 127 samples to generate a LUT-base monitor
profile? In the skintones of some close-up portraits, in Photoshop, using
this first profile, there was some visible, less than flattering color
shifts and slight posterizations.
Second, using the EyeOnePro, I tried calibrating and create a profile under
the exact settings. Not better.
Third, I asked for 512 samples. This time, the color was very nice. Very
nice indeed.
I'll come back with my settings later but this is fantastic, Graeme and
Florian.
I'm looking to use this combination in January for my upcoming color classes
at UQAM.
