Just a followup:

After loading the Argyll i1Pro USB drivers (OK, I didn't read the
installation instructions...) the device works properly on Win32 machines.

However, I cannot get it to work on my (AMD) 64 bits OS (XP Pro, SP2).

It would seem that, whatever I do, the installation wants to use the
32-bit drivers as I get:
  "An error occurred during the installation of the device" and
  "Driver is not intended for this platform"

What can I do to fix the problem?
