It's typically a fake number as far as I understand. Most displays aren't
capable of simultaneously displaying colors with such a contrast ratio,
and other factors (such as ambient light and/or light from the display itself)
typically limit the maximum practical simultaneous contrast ratio.
So they fake it by adding an iris to a projector, or varying the the
backlighting dynamically, so it is only real if you measure white and black
separately while excluding all ambient light.
