The DTP is rated up to 500cd/m^2 (that's the Y value).

Good idea. I will try to do that. The 'neutral' diffuser could be the hard point... 

I was thinking some tracing paper or something similar would do
for a start. Some white translucent acrylic sheet is what's generally
used for such purpose.
