I can add that neither
dispwin -r
is doing anything, except saying "darkening screen" and so on. No effect
on the screen for any of the actions.

I discovered that Fedora provides a failsafe graphics login, that
appears to be just X (with a nice background) and a xterm. Also from
there dispwin has no effects!
