I test this on  a livecd on a laptop here. ARGYLL_IGNORE_XRANDR1_2=1
(or yes) gives no difference. xgamma also execute well, but no
brightness changes on the screen.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon
Mobility X700 (PCIE)

I have attached the xorg.log on this.
