Thanks. Without starting to look at the color conversions,
I don't like the look of the original - it seems to have a great
deal of quantization and reversals, not something you'd normally
see in a natural image. I've isolated a section of the
blue channel, and picked out a range of values and magnified
them to make it obvious, and put it here:

In the original the reversals are only one bit
(ie. there are value sequences of 59, 61, 62, 61, 63, 61, 64, 63
etc., where a more steady (but noisier) sequence would be expected,
and if a similar thing is happening in the highlights,
and it hits a sensitive part of the color conversion (ie. small
device changes lead to large PCS changes), then this may
be the source of the problem.
