[argyllcms] Profiling a device - correct way?

I've been using ArgyllCMS for quite some time now to calibrate and
profile my display. But what if I just want to profile it?
Since I could not find anything about that specific issue online, I ask
here. My usual process looks like this:
1. Use dispcal to calibrate the screen to a certain brightness/gamma and
color temperature value
2. targen to create test patches (usually around 400-500, which I think
should suffice)
3. dispread to actually make use of the patches and profile my device
4. profile to create a ICM/ICC-file
But now, I only want to profile a friend's monitor, without calibrating
it and messing with the LUT, so that applications know how it displays
colors, nothing more.
Would that be done just by skipping step one? As I understand, the
profile then will contain information about how colors are displayed,
but what about
the gamma value? Would this bring the expected result?
Thanks in advance,
Steffen
