Which version of gimp are you using. Are you using the gutenprint gimp
plugin to print?
No version of gimp can make use of a printer profile in printing. The
2.4 version can use a profile for print proofing, meaning giving you
some idea on your display what the print would look like and which
colors would be outside the printer's gamut. But that subject is a
whole other matter which you need to learn about, so don't worry about
it right now.
To actually print, you have to write out your file from gimp (as a tiff
file). You should then use the argyll program cctiff with source the
appropriate profile and destination your printer profile. At this
point, gimp is almost certainly going to be using sRGB color space. You
can check that by looking (under gimp 2.4) under Image>Image
Properties>Color Management. So that should be the source profile.
You can then read the modified tiff file back into gimp and print from
there. A somewhat better alternative would be to use photoprint to do
the printing, including the color management and use of the printer
profile. You can also use photoprint to create the initial test print
you use for profiling, and an explanation for how to do that is (hidden)
at the photoprint web site. When you get to that point, get back to
me, and I will explain it.
As I said before, I'm just slightly ahead of you and I am using a very
similar setup using gimp under Linux. Maybe you will shortly get ahead
of me and enlighten me about my continuing misconceptions. ;-)
