I am willing to bet it is an RGB inkjet printer. My Epson 1280 is and
as far as I know all the commonly available inkjet printers expect RGB.
Of course at some point that has to be converted to the colors of the
inks, but you can ignore that part of the process.
In any case, I had no trouble profiling my 1280 with the Eye One Pro.

You are doing exactly what I have been doing. I also use gutenprint.

Might I recommend again that you read a book like Real World Color
Management by Fraser, et. al. It explains many of these matters, in
particular why most inkjet printers should be regarded as RGB printers.
