Sounds like a Linux/X11 specific issue, nothing to do with dispwin.
(ie. try any running any X11 program like xeyes, and I would expect
you will get a similar message).

Basically there is an problem communicating to the X11 server. It could
be the $DISPLAY variable, X11 authorization, networking setup, using ssh etc. 
etc.
I'm not familiar with what can go wrong to really help much more than this 
though, sorry.
