The last is what's doing it. I remembered that Fedora has an option
to run XFCE, and managed to duplicate what you see. I'll investigate
as time allows...


OK, the answer is that I need to set the appropriate hint on the window
in dispwin.c, and it will be rendered opaque. Mind you, the atom isn't
documented anywhere except the XFCE source code...
