One of the difficulties is in actually measuring the gamma. Very slight
changes near black due to display adjustment can have a huge effect on

profile claimed that many typical CRT displays they measured had a gamma
of 2.2, but their method of calculating this figure isn't clear.

Certainly if I measure the approximate gamma of my CRTs (which is
computed from the 50% ratio), I get a numbers like 2.45 and 2.8, and
the traditionally expected number for television work, based on the
physics of the displays is 2.5.
