When you say "after a while", do you mean you waited a while
and then ran spotread again, or that spotread paused for a while,
and then came out with "** No ports found **" ?

If it is the former, then it sounds like some other software
is starting up and then grabbing the instrument, although the
above doesn't match the behavior Klaus sees when the
eye-one match has the instrument open.

For the instrument to appear and then later get a "** No ports found **"
message means that the USB device is being removed from the normal
USB device enumeration at some point by something.

What does system profiler show once the instrument has disappeared ?
