For an additive device, they certainly should be on the straight line
between the RGB primaries. You're right though that they may not
be in the middle, but will be at a location that depends on the relative
strength of the two primaries. Perhaps the trick is to measure the
XYZ of the RGB, add them together, then compute the x,y from the sum.

x = X/(X+Y+Z)
y = Y/(X+Y+Z)
