in the Linux/X11 world are thinking about it. Someone was having
a go at adding color management to the X11 composting
manager which is an interesting approach to solving this sort
of problem, but I'm not sure where that project is at.
A experimental plug-in for converting desktop colours to monitor device space colours exists in Oyranos git [1]. While the colour_desktop named plug-in for the compiz compositing window manager works for me (tested with compiz 0.7.6) it interferes with most colour managed applications [2].
An other approach would be to use display controls to desaturate the device as pointed out already.
