        I'm not familiar with the details of such methods, but the above
doesn't sound correct if a specific Lab is targeted. There is
only one degree of freedom left for CMYK, and if K is set to zero,
then there are no degrees of freedom left to set an M or Y value.
Even if K was left unconstrained, there is not enough degrees of
freedom left to set both an M and Y value.

It's not clear to me what sort of curves you are after...
