[argyllcms] Re: Can I calibrate crap?

Hi,

I think my problem in calibration and profiling is a high black level, about 3 cd/m2. Contrast-ratio is poor even though brightness is pretty good, 112 cd/m2 at less than max backlight.
Before calibration my LCD has a distinct blueish cast.

I have a pretty lousy screen on my HP6720s laptop but had little trouble getting usable results with a DTP94 colorimeter. Which instrument do you have? Some older instruments don't work properly with LCDs, and your comment about giving up on an older laptop, but having no problem with an old CRT makes me wonder if that's where your problem lies?

Profiling corrects colors but everything comes out oversaturated.

Are you profiling as a separate step, or letting dispcal do the job? If a separate step, are you remembering to provide the -k file.cal argument to dispread?

One thing worth bearing in mind: monitor profiles commonly only have tables for the Relative Colorimetric rendering intent. If the monitor's performance is really poor, it can be worth asking colprof to include a Perceptual table as well, using the -S parameter.

All the best,
