Hal, my LCD is a E2403WS and it has 1000:1 contrast too.
What setting am I missing to get the best ratio ? Should I lower the brightness/contrast from the OSD menu ?

I think what I'd do in that situation is take the monitor back to factory settings, and measure the ratio between black and white "out of the box".

Then reduce the brightness to the point where you don't need a welding mask any more, and measure the ratio again.

Then use the RGB controls to adjust the white point colour and measure a third time.

In this way you can see which of your adjustments is having the greatest impact on the ratio (if any) and rethink if necessary.

You don't want to touch the contrast control of an LCD if you can help it. *Hopefully* (though nothing's guaranteed) the factory setting for Contrast will be the setting which least messes with the signal.

The other thing to bear in mind is that there's no standard way of measuring the contrast ratios that manufacturers advertise. Are they measuring a fully white screen, then a fully dark screen? Or a checkerboard pattern? What kind of room lighting to they use? If they're not using a full-screen of solid black and white what's the background like? How much backscatter is there in the surface of the screen? However they do it, I very much doubt they're just displaying a few patches of colour in the middle of a normal desktop and slapping a spyder onto it!

All the best,
