Setting BootGUI=0 is the classic and 100% working method of doing this.
AFAIK, it works for all versions from early Win95A to Win98SE.
If you rename win.com to w.com and create a batch file win.bat that just
contains
W.COM
MODE CO80,25
you can even continue to work in DOS after shutting down Windows
(provided that you disable APM/ACPI support in the BIOS setup, otherwise
it would power off the PC instead).
