My mistake! I thought it was a bit of hex arithmetic.

You were absolutely right. I now get the DOS prompt as expected.

I made one change to your suggested method. The batch file is named
W.BAT, and I have left WIN.COM alone. So I save two characters when
calling it <GGGGGG>

Since I was testing this from a clean boot, I just corrected W.BAT and
now it works as expected.
