I am told that it doesn't exit to DOS in the same state as a boot to
DOS.

Automatic(?) Power Management. It is usually found in the CMOS setup.
After reading the message yesterday, I checked on the Win computer, and
disabled the APM. Now when Windows exits to "shutdown" it goes to a screen
that says "It is now safe to turn off the power to the computer".
I haven't yet tried the WIN.BAT batch file with
W.COM
MODE CO80,25
which I guess should quit that screen and go to the DOS prompt.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
