Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!
Glennmcc,
Thank you for your input. I try to be careful with my slashs,
as I am extremely dyslexic and REALLY need to be careful with
that. I am now using keyboards with those keys more separated
since I am doing a lot of switching between DOS and Linux. I
have had a 'bad computer week', as I tried to install OpenDos
and that box has a bad floppy drive. It was my NetBSD box, and
the floppy drive in it was a drive I cobbled in from another
box, so I pulled my OpenBSD box, which I use headless as I only
have room for two monitors and keyboards, and the drive in it is
crapped and I have no more floppy drives, and I have been unable
to make a CD install disk for OpenDos7.01. Just the first floppy
works that way so far. But I have become somewhat enamored with
FreeDos. It makes OpenDos7.01 and DrDOS7.03, which I always used
before seem somewhat primitive, and it's GPL. It's not just a
bunch of cheesey, flaky, buggy work arounds on top of old
proprietary systems. It has reinstituted my interest in DOS, so
I won't bother the list with any problems I have with the
Arachne/FreeDos incompatibilitys. I was using the BaseInstall
but the FullInstall has Arachne and a gazillion 'nix ports in it.
I do prefer the 'new and improved' 195 version tho. I even installed
the 170 version to check. 195 is much better. I'm also on my third
NIC in this box as I googled my butt off trying to find drivers for
the other two. I'm with Jason, the hardware Manufacturers need to
open up their specs.

OK! I was real curious to see if one could administer a
server from Arachne using ssh. I haven't used DOS in a
lot of years so I wiped NetBSD from my BSD box and installed
FreeDOS. I then installed Arachne, made a temp dir and all,
searched the web for a packet driver, being a lucky one on
this list I never had to search for drivers or DLLs in 'nix,
like I always have for dos/windows, anyway back to it. When
I access the WWW it takes forever to load a page such as google.
plus I have to enter the full address in the address bar, http*
Also the X on the toolbar does nothing, isn't this supposed to
exit Arachne? I installed the ssh apms, if I use the address
bar to file:\\ssh2dos.htm, I get "Arachne Load Error". I
Hotlisted it when I installed it, but if I use that, all I get
is a black screen with "SSH2DOS done.", and "file://ssh2dos.dgi"
in the address bar. If I go to the utilities page and click on
"List of installed packages", I get another "Arachne Load Error".
Emptying the cache whether F8, cache button, or the "empty cache"
button after the many freezes, lockups, and crashes, reboots,
et.al. 'uh why did I quit dos/windows?' will just freeze Arachne.
Emptying the cache by going to the cache dir and using del
corrupts the cookie.lst and arachne won't start. Any help on this?
I'm not sure what's up. BTW I later installed SSH2DOS and it works
fine, sshd386 and sftpd386 work great. sftpd386 downloaded a 8.5
Megabyte file in 35 seconds which isn't real shabby. Compression
uses too much memory for DOS it seems tho, but I was able to play
audio files on my remote host and use startx, but obviously no
X Forwarding but my Linux private keys did work. I realize there
has been no interest in SSH on this list, which I find somewhat
odd, but any help with the other problems would be appreciated.

Hi Rob,
Well... let's start with the file:\\ssh2dos.htm load error.
For all protocols (including file: ), you need to use forward slashes
not backslashes.
http://
ftp://
file://
With the file: protocol..... the double forward slash is optional.
However... any leading back slash is going to work the same on the
Arachne URL line as it does at the DOS command line.
At the DOS command line.....
'type somefile.txt'
shows the contents of somefile.txt in the current directory.
However.....
'type \somefile.txt'
shows the content of somefile.txt in the 'root dir'
On the Arachne URL line....
file://somefile.htm
or...
file:somefile.htm
Views somefile.htm in the Arrchnae_main directory
However....
file:\\somefile.htm
or...
file://\\somefile.htm
views somefile.htm in the root dir

Now on to the other problems....
It sounds liek a path setting problem.
Please reply to this email with a paste-in of this section of arachne.cfg
[system]
Hotlist .\hotlist.htm
History .\history.lst
CookieFile .\cookies.lst
CacheIndex .\cache.idx
CachePath .\cache\
Cache2TEMP No
MailPath .\mail\
DownloadPath .\download\
Do each of the path specs end in a backslash ?
Do each of the 3 dirs exist under your arachne_main dir ?

Now as to needing the full URL spec.....
Arachne will 'auto-prepend' http:// to a URL entered _if_ that URL
contains at-least one 'dot' before the first '/'
somewhere.com/
Will become...
http://somewhere.com/
But, simply....
somewhere
all by itself will result in in your chosen search engine being used
to do a search for the text that you entered.
_______________
And finally to the many freezes, lockups, crashes and reboots.....
That can be summed-up into one word....... 'FreeDOS'
Many, many folks have known for many, many years that Arachne cannot be
used reliably with FreeDOS.
My suggestion is to use what I have used with absolutely no
incompatabilty problems what-so-ever since 1997
