Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club! All, Just letting you guys know that I've been pursuing a very interesting project for the last few days. We've most of us known the frustration of trying to figure out what's wrong with Arachne when she won't start or won't behave properly for one reason or another, and we all know that sometimes the problem is buried somewhere in 'arachne.cfg'. I've created an experimental core.exe that creates 'config.log' after it has read 'arachne.cfg' and records therein the values that Arachne is *actually* using -- which are often not the values you think she is using. Besides the understandable problems like misspelled options, or double instances of an option or incorrectly entered values, there are lots of other things that can baffle one about arachne.cfg. Arachne sets defaults for some configuration options but not others. she also ignores some options that are out of range but sometimes she *fixes* values that are out of range and sometimes she changes the value of one option depending on the value of another. By checking config.log after something has gone wrong, I'm hoping that users might very quickly find configuration errors. You also get a very revealing picture of what Arachne is up to. Every configuration option is listed, whether you've set a value for it or not. I've already discovered two or three things were certain defaults were not what I expected.
