I had it working with a 2400 external modem quite happily on old 286,
but became very huffy with the same modem on a 486. I never found out
why.

Hehe...count one of mine as well! My old IBM PS2 has an internal Racal Vadic
2400 baud modem...dialing doesn't work with LSPPP, but NetDial does the job.
LSPPP doesn't like speeds less than 28.8, though you can force it via
commandline option to sometimes work with 14.4 modems...
