[arachne] Re: lsppp

Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Hmmm ... interesting. Let's see if we can solve this puzzle ...

Firstly, some general questions :

1. Are you using FreeDOS?
2. Are you using the "/z" option with LSPPP?
(Note: Yesterday I mentioned "/x" as the LSPPP option for
logging, this was incorrect, I should have said "/z".)
3. Are you using "lsppp /u" or "arachne -u" to unload LSPPP?

Now some more specific questions :

4. Check the "one modem that does not switch off when
LSPPP unloads". What is its "&D" setting? (You should be
able to use "AT&V" to query its most common settings.)
5. The "one ISP that is not working well with LSPPP", was
   this checked with version 0.74 and/or 1.0/1.01?

Finally, some comments :

1. I know of two possibilities for LSPPP to work with some
ISP's but not others. The first possibility is the LCP bug in
versions 0.75 to 0.765. The second possibility is that some
ISP's require a small pause between PPP negotiation and
TCP/IP traffic (my LSPPPCFG package introduces a two
second pause, previously it used a one second pause, but
I recently encountered an ISP were this was sometimes
   still inadequate).
2. Newer versions of LSPPP are able to load more than once,
so if you find LSPPP loaded at 0x60 and 0x61, this may be
caused by the "unable to unload" problem. If the "unable to
unload" problem cannot be resolved, I would recommend
LSPPP version 0.74, which is the other version available
   from my web site.
3. Although I haven't mentioned version 0.8 (aka 0.766) of
LSPPP previously, this is also a reasonable version except
that the "automatic DNS configuration" feature is broken.
   Generally, I would recommend versions 0.74 or 1.01 (1.0
is fine too, provided you have a "good" FIFO). Don't bother
   with other versions.
4. If you are trying to install LSPPP with Arachne on multiple
computers, you should definitely try my LSPPPCFG
package, this will save you a lot of work, especially if you
   use different accounts/ISP's.

Regards,
Joe.
