Sam,
This is so very true! When I was on dialup I was allowed to
use my ISP's servers reserved for DSL connections. They've
given me computers they didn't need anymore, including one
that cost them over $20,000.00 in '97, a Telco Carrier grade
Sun server, and some other little perks. Well I guess one
wasn't so little. Courtesy, patience, and a little knowledge
and understanding can go a long ways. They are one of the
better ISPs too, all DSL customers still have dialup
capabilities, toll free number for free dialup anywhere in
the country, free home service for computer problems, many
of which aren't their fault, and openly support any OS or
system a customer wants to use. They still state on their
website that they will support anyone using DOS.

If you want to know what's going on with your ISP you have to form a
relationship with someone higher up in the support department. You have
to be friendly and politely persistent. Never get angry! Show them some
sympathy and understanding and be somewhat knowledgeable yourself. Ask
intelligent questions. Be helpful and send along information when you
see something. Try to be on their side. Prove to them that you're not
going to be a pest or a problem and they will go out of their way to help
you out--maybe give you an extra large inbox quota or give you access to
a "reserved" server. There's lot of stuff the higher ups can do if they
want to. But if you're a pain in the ass complainer and a pest, you'll
get no respect and no answers for your problems. Don't expect the inside
scoop about security unless they kow you really well.
