Ray's response......

| Ron,
|
| The plot thickens here. Of course I can resurrect the old method,
| and now that it seems to actually work *properly* I'm a whole
| lot more inclined to do so. But I'd still rather not, for
| reasons of size and speed and consistency and adaptability.
| As you know, my core is smaller and faster, and I like that,
| adding a pile of keywords to marginally simplify setup of
| lsppp.cfg isn't something I want to do -- if it can be
| avoided. However, I'll have to have something damn near as
| good to avoid it. Who is going to put up with needing to
| move a cursor by hand just to save 40% in speed and gain
| ca. 100K of memory? Seems no one.

| Now... get the 3 items in post 779 done... and we can announce to the
| world that your distro package is indeed 'ready for prime time' !!!!

| Not so fast, I ain't throwing in the towel yet.
| Check out 1.htm at tripod, it's the first draft of how I'd
| do it. No new keywords, no bogging the core down, and no recoding
| a whole module that I'm too tired to do anyway for the foreseeable
| future. It could use a lot of editing, funny little bugs that
| I can't figure out.

|
| If you would make one of those for each of the variables to be
| written, you would have what looks like a Wizard, would you not ?
|
| But I haffta say I still prefer the way the Std. Arachne used to do
| it, with easy, hand-holding Wizards.

|
| Are you saying that to add those things back into your core it will
| take up an extra 100K of memory and lose 40 % of its speed ?
|
| Is that all you have achieved with your re-write ?
|
| Surely not !
|
| I have no axe to grind, either way. I can see your point in not
| wanting to give back the advantages that you have given your core, and I
| can also wish for the simplicity and elegance of the solution Glenn has
| just developed.
|
| Now it is up to you two C-speaking geniuses to find a way through. :)
|
| In any case, I can't test for dial-up Wizards, as I no longer have a
| dial-up account anywhere.

The above mentioned 1.htm is now at my site.

http://cisnet.com/glennmcc/1.htm

Ray would also need to write similar pages to be used for
creating/editing ... minitrm.cfg and pppdrc.cfg

We need the opinions of you... the users.

Will you use Ray's idea for creating/editing those
three .CFG files from inside of Arachne ?
