That is so obvious that it passes right over the heads of most users who
are quite content to upgrade every year or so.

Perhaps it is something to do with having a later, bigger, faster
computer than your acquaintances.

No chance. It is so easy for them to provide a link where you can
download the latest 300 Mb version of the software to run the files on
their site.

And of course everyone has "Automatic Updates" turned on, on their
computers, don't they!
