Why don't you use any disk cache? Although Arachne works mostly
on the ramdisk in your setup (I assume that E: is your ramdisk),
many programs used by dgi scripts still have to be loaded from C:.
This includes COMMAND.COM, CORE.EXE (which has to be reloaded when
the memory has to be freed for an external program), GUI/desktop
elements, etc. A disk cache (not necessarily large, even 0.5 MB)
could reduce the time wasted on searching directories and loading
these files. (There is also a possibility of copying all Arachne
stuff and frequently called programs onto the ramdisk, but with
total 12 MB RAM the advantages of this approach are questionable.)
Some write delay (reasonably short to minimize the chance of data
loss when Arachne hangs) can also improve your overall system's
performance.
And where is your CACHE.IDX, on C: or on the ramdisk (E:)?

Michal
