I have never (not once) had any files fouled up after an Arachne
crash.  And I've never had a stable release of Arachne crash on
startup except due to a faulty 'arachne.cfg' (no 'Nameserver' or something
like that).  The stuff you report above is major bad news.  What 
version are you using?  I'm thinking there might be some other problem
with your system, like a disk cache problem or something that's not
closing files properly.
