I can't see how you would automate going from incoming message
to a reply in the outbox without going through the page that
opens the internal editor for editing the reply, which as I said
is one of the stages where the internal editor can and HAS
damaged my messages.
   
And I can't figure out how you would attach a file using the
external editor.

As far as I am concerned there are only two practical solutions:
1. fix the internal editor;
OR
2. rewrite the compose/modify message screen so it bypasses the
   internal editor altogether.
