Since the internal editor is the only thing I have trouble with, within Arachne and with other software, I suspect that the problem is within the editor. One point I have noticed of late is that I am more likely to have trouble with the first use of the day. For example, I downloaded your reply yesterday but wasn't able to find tome to reply today. When I hit the Reply button and the editor opened, one of the previously blank lines contained the characters "imbo!" (without the quotes). I started to write the reply by commenting on this addition, but when the screen scrolled down automatically as I wrote some new lines, the extra characters disappeared, and so did some of the other text. I hit cancel, which took me back to your message. I hit Reply again and the editor started up as it should have. But I wasn't goiung to risk more trouble so I'm writing this in the external editor. > Perhaps we should make an inventary of the systems used by the mebers > that do have problems with the internal editor and those who don't. > In order to detect what could be the cause... Perhaps we should... but I have the feeling we've gone this way before. > What I use, without problems: > Pentium I, 75MHz or 233MHz > Both computers have win95 installed of which the DOS (7.2 ???) is used > for Arachne 1.61 (favourite) or 1.75. > Both computers are booted DOS-only for Arachne and no ramdisk is used. > Cache is on HD and is cleaned from time to time with F8. > FAT16 file system is used on the HD. What I use, with problems: 486DX33, 12 meg RAM, running from MS-DOS 6.22. I am running with 4 meg RAMdisk, which carries the cache and the temp files. 540 meg HDD with currently about 56 meg free. Shelling out to DOS and running MEM /C gives the following (Q65 is the copy of QEDIT that I am writing this with, with the right margin at column 65). ====== MEM /C ===================================================== Modules using memory below 1 MB: Name Total = Conventional + Upper Memory -------- ---------------- ---------------- ---------------- MSDOS 18,141 (18K) 18,141 (18K) 0 (0K) HIMEM 1,168 (1K) 1,168 (1K) 0 (0K) EMM386 3,120 (3K) 3,120 (3K) 0 (0K) COMMAND 3,568 (3K) 3,568 (3K) 0 (0K) Q65 1,264 (1K) 1,264 (1K) 0 (0K) COMMAND 3,072 (3K) 3,072 (3K) 0 (0K) ANSI 4,240 (4K) 0 (0K) 4,240 (4K) RAMDRIVE 1,232 (1K) 0 (0K) 1,232 (1K) SMARTDRV 29,024 (28K) 0 (0K) 29,024 (28K) MMOUSE 12,768 (12K) 0 (0K) 12,768 (12K) DOSKEY 4,144 (4K) 0 (0K) 4,144 (4K) Free 699,312 (683K) 624,896 (610K) 74,416 (73K) Memory Summary: Type of Memory Total = Used + Free ---------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- Conventional 655,360 30,464 624,896 Upper 125,824 51,408 74,416 Reserved 393,216 393,216 0 Extended (XMS) 11,408,512 7,050,368 4,358,144 ---------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- Total memory 12,582,912 7,525,456 5,057,456 Total under 1 MB 781,184 81,872 699,312 Largest executable program size 624,800 (610K) Largest free upper memory block 74,192 (72K) MS-DOS is resident in the high memory area. ==== END OF MEM /C =================================================== Arachne at FreeLists -- Arachne, The Web Browser/Suite for DOS and Linux --
