Except that the editor is running
(a) when you first open the message compose or modify screens
before you hit the [External Editor] button; and
(b) again when you return from the external editor, and before
you hit the [Send Mail NOW] or {save to Outbox] button.

During this time, the editor has the ability to damage the
message, on certain systems, or with certain setups, as happened
to me again this morning.

Yes, that's right.

No doubt there are to those people who have never had their
messages damaged while going to and from the external editor, to
the point where they have to be scrapped and started again from
scratch.
