Nothing could be easier than to create a document in plain text. If a
table format is not needed then plain text is fine. I looked at part
of the example Greg posted and tables were not used.
However, where appropriate, a table can be much easier to read,
provided that entries are short. Eg suppose that developers update a
column showing which changes have been scheduled for a coming
software version. A reader could simply run their eye down that column
to see at a glance what was happening. If a column had been omitted
from from the original table format, spreadsheet software could insert
the new column in a single operation and it could be positioned
anywhere. One column could be for Misc. Notes.
If a tabular form is to be employed I would not want to use plain text
to maintain it. However as there is a desire to read in plain
text, it looks like the best option for now is that I (and anyone who
would like to assist) maintain a spreadsheet master and publish as a
text only version (example attached).
Two limitations of this are that: there is no option to display lines
to separate columns and rows; if an app is used that insists on line
wrapping, the result would be a mess.
In the longer term I would go with Bob's preference for an HTML
version. And in the v. long, maybe term bolt in some goodies like my
"over-the-top" idea.
BTW Greg, I recall that you posted a list of 3? proposed mods. If
these should be on the 2dolist can you please send info (sorry have
mislaid your post) You could even try the FEATUS route (
featus@xxxxxxxxxxxx )
Thanks
John
