I have several email addresses, some of which have hundreds of spams
per day, but I end up downloading almost zero spam messages. This is
fortunate as I only have a dial-up connection!

Two parts to my particular solution:

First use free, disposable email accounts for mailing lists. These
stay spam free for months or years. When they eventually fall, discard
and renew. Sources include http://www.hotpop.com and
http://www.softhome.net

For other mail where a permanent address is needed, use the free
service at http://www.0spam.com which filters mail before download.
You provide the 0spam website with details of the POP mail accounts
you want to be cleared of spam. 0spam then periodically checks the
accounts, deleting any spam. A refinement is available by placing a
0spam pseudo email account at the top of the list of POP accounts you
read. This forces an extra clear-out immediately prior to your mail
download.

Some limitations:
- Sign-ups may not be Arachne friendly.
- When white/black lists etc. have not been set up, 0spam sends a mail
confirmation request.
- 0spam.com might not be a good idea if you are concerned about
security of your email, but is not a problem for me.
- The reliability of free services may be suspect in the long term?

But they work fine for me :-)
John
