[arachne] WinXP & Arachne

Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Hi All,
Several trials have been made to run Arachne on this XP-machine.

Most of them failed and one of the courses is the NTFS-system the
harddisk is using and formated with... DOS can not read from the HD!

****** there is a DOS-prompt in XP and that is imitating the FAT (16?)
system that DOS can use. Many DOS programs do run properly this way, but
not ARACHNE :-((

****** I have a floppy, if I remember well Glennmcc did compose it one day.
The computer can boot from that floppy and installs Arachne on a virtual
disk D:\.
Arachne runs perfectly, but:
files like \MAIL\*.*, \CACHE\ and \DOWNLOAD\ are not save on a virtual
drive because they are lost if the machine is switched off.
Items like arachne.cfg are written back to the floppy for a next session
of Arachne.

Well, let's save MAIL\, CACHE\ and DOWNLOAD\ directories to the HD.
#$%@#! Can't be done since DOS (Arachne) does not even see the main HD!

I installed a second HD (FAT32 formated) and DOS does recognise this one
as C:\ and files can be written to it... IF the directories are first
created on this extra disk. The creation of these directories can be
done in winXP or with the DOS-command makedir (or something like that).

Tools like NORTON Commander can also be installed on this extra HD (mine
is 2GB, but a smaller HD can be used for Arachne).

Dialing in is by a telephone modem at COM1.

****** To use this system of operation for Arachne (version 1.83) from a
floppy...

-1 You must have a floppy drive
-2 You must have a serial port
-3 Printer? Did not try that.

As this machine uses the same LAN-card as my other machine I see no
reason why DSL should not work with the packet driver RTSPKT 0x60.
I think I will try it one day...
