I'd recommend either MS-DOS 6.22 or PC-DOS 7; both are very fast and
compatible. DR-DOS would also be a good choice, however, it is a bit
unstable in the EMM386 department, and I doubt that you would need any
of its advanced features for the purpose you have in mind.
FreeDOS is probably not the best OS since it is known to have problems
with Arachne. I heard that both PTS- and ROM-DOS have compatibility
issues, but I have not used them much so I cannot say if they would
work with Arachne.
