[arachne] Re: Users and Wizards

Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Hi List!

Finally at my desktop P166, fired up Arachne 1.90J1 387, decided to post
my views regarding typical users and wizards in Arachne...KEEP THE
WIZARDS! I have seen far too many new users to Arachne stumble and
bumble in attempts to "manually edit" configuration files in vain
attempts to get it connected, despite advice from others to at least
use the wizards first, get a connection, then work on optimizing.

Speaking of optimizing, think for a minute...how many typical PC users
would know WHAT an AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS are? If one of these
people did decide to try and run DOS, the best to hope for is maybe
getting them to run MEMMAKER or other automatic optimizing utility.

We need to face facts...the computer world is geared towards Windows and
to some degree Apple OSX, with only a smidgen of Linux. I often ask
myself why Linux has not progressed on the "home user desktop"?? After
the cussin' and discussions over the past few weeks in regards to
Arachne's "forks", I think I've been self-enlightened to the answer,
there's just too much choice for most users to pick through! Is this
what we desire for Arachne? I hope not.

For myself, I choose to use the "standard" package...that way I can
simply copy files and directories from prior releases to the new one.
You can't do that if you change the directory tree structure. Another
question is in regards to APMs...some of them look for external programs
in specific sub-directories. By breaking with tradition, just for the
sake of being different, those APMs may not funcion as intended. I
commend Ray for his work in cleaning the source code for CORE, but I
also advise to consider reimplementing previous directory structures.
This could have a side benefit for us, the users of Arachne...rather
having to install yet another complete Arachne setup, we could then use
different CORE versions in a "drop in replacement" fashion, much like I
used to do with A1.62 and A1.66 via a "coreswap" APM.

Either way, if any particular author chooses to change Arachne GPL to
his/her own desires, they are free to do so...that's part of FOSS.
There is no single "right way" to do things...just as there is no single
one "best version of DOS"!

Hope everyone's new year is off to a great start, will C U L8R!
