In the olden days, before traffic damage was repaired by simply replacing
the damaged panels, a fairly decent living could be made by straightening out
dented and bashed car components. These folks were called panel-beaters, and my
Dad was one such. It involves using mallets and various metal shapes. You hold
the correct shape on one side of the panel and bash the other side with a
mallet, in order to work the metal back to its original shape. It was hard work
and required a great deal of skill to re-mould the curves, folds and flat areas
back to the original form.

A good panel beater could return a damaged panel so that you could not see
that it had been damaged at all, and a magnet placed over the repaired area did
not fall off (indicating that the dent had not just been filled with lead or
fibre-glass).

Most listers would have known about that, but I guess it is a sign of the
times that there are folks who don't.

Regards,
        Ron
