It occured to me again that this sounds like I'm an advocate for
windows. Truth is it isn't in my top 10 favorite OSs. Maybe not even
in the top 20. So I'm not doing that. Just pointing out that although
IE isn't a browser I relish, you needn't get viruses, trojans or popups
when you use it. I'd say the ratio of popups I get using firefox on
windows is similar to IE + google toolbar. Some, but very few.
As for 'most people' getting them when using ie... most people never
defrag a windows harddrive either. And I don't think the people in this
group are in the category of 'most people' when it comes to computing
habits. Defragging! another reason I avoid windows.
No fooling. There are at least 5 people I know who were going to
replace a perfectly good and reasonably fast windows pc because it was
too slow. In each case, I defragged, installed avg antivirus, ran
spybot search and destroy, zonealarm firewall, and google toolbar. They
all were amazed at the difference and decided their machines weren't so
slow after all. Now they defrag every couple weeks and all seem content.
The point is while windows has many things we all don't like, a little
care can make a big difference.

Well, google's popup blocker works good for me. I get very, very few
popups using it. Of course you need to run anti spyware/virus
software but that's more a windows issue than browser. I don't use
windows at home but I haven't had anyone report to me that the
combination of the blocker, firewall, and antivirus software has let
them down.
